Yvan Lamoureux felt that cereal boxes were the fluid expression of an experience that would unfold when the contents were poured into a breakfast bowl. They played with the purchaser’s emotions through the dancing interplay of colour and shape. They told a story and created an expectation. Shampoo bottles contained promises that were communicated by the style of their logo and spacing of the lettering that was stamped on their labels. Ice cream cartons like Blue Boy were a work of art whose value undoubtedly matched the richness of the treat it contained.
In short, Yvan recognized early on that the designs used by the everyday commercial products in his environment had been created with intent, with the goal of imparting meaning above and beyond what was spelt out on the label. Later, having gone to both business school and art school Yvan began his career in marketing and advertising. His first decision to become an artist fed his desire for deeper applied meaning. It was not enough to do work for one’s self in the traditional artist’s sense. He wanted to contribute in his own way to the greater community and in the same manner as he first experienced it. His further pursuit of marketing education and subsequent experience working for and in B2C & B2B industries such as Pharmaceuticals, Medical Device, Retail, Food and Beverage, brought his lifelong study of marketing materials to life, and it has given him and his staff members a solid perspective through which Crankworks consistently supports its clients.
